As a reformed junk food addict and sugaraholic, I know too well the rollercoaster ride you’re on. You want your body to run like a luxury limousine service, you really do.

And while you’re thinking about how much you want your engine purring like a stretch limo, you’re shoving tons of cookies, cakes, and fast food into your pie hole (yes, they call it that for a reason).

You’d love for somebody to just stop the madness for you because God knows you can’t.


Besides, eating sugar feels so damn good!

What Rats Know About Sugar Addiction

The more you eat that delicious powdery stuff, the more you want it. And to quell the sugar beast? You’ll need to eat increasing quantities of it.

Think about it. When was the last time you absolutely HAD to have more carrots, beets, or kale before you sat down to watch Game Of Thrones?

It’s a vicious addictive cycle that has no end. The evidence, however, will plainly show on your waist line, on your face, and on your medical reports.

What you have to understand is this: It flat out just takes time to beat down this addiction. There’s just no way around it. You’ll take one step forward and three steps backward.

Expect it.

Here’s why. In a recent study on sugar, rats chose sugar water over cocaine 94% of the time. Even those rats that were addicted to cocaine chose sugar!

How The Cholesterol Theory Hid The Real Culprit

In the 1950’s, a biochemist named Ancel Keyes had a mission. He was out to prove that fat was dangerous. Publishing a flawed study, he told the world that fat and cholesterol were killers. The American Medical Association highly criticized him for this flawed study, but Keyes theory that was never proven became the law of the land.

Highly respected scientists like John Yudkin also criticized the study. Yudkin firmly believed that sugar was the culprit, not fat. Yudkin said, “If only a small fraction of what we know about the effects of sugar were to be revealed in relation to any other material used as a food additive,” he wrote, “that material would promptly be banned.”

He was right, of course, but that wasn’t what food manufacturers wanted to hear. So they set about discrediting his work, which included a book he wrote called, “Pure White and Deadly.”

Keyes despised Yudkin and also worked to discredit his results, and he did. By the time Yudkin retired in 1970 to write his book, he was no longer offered speaking engagements. Any papers he wrote that attacked sugar were omitted.

Why Am I Telling You This?

Because education is another step to overcoming your addiction. No, it won’t stop you from downing a Hershey bar. But with every bite you take, you will remember sugar’s unsavory history and how it got you in this mess to begin with!

In this case, anger is a motivating emotion. Making the connection between why you’re craving that Hershey bar and the food manufacturers that supported erroneous science to line their pockets is a powerful one.

So let me finish my story about John Yudkin. It’s important.

Yudkin became despondent about the stance the world had taken regarding sugar.

 The results may be of great importance in helping people to avoid disease, but you then find they are being misled by propaganda designed to support commercial interests in a way you thought only existed in bad B films.


By the end of the ’70’s, Dr. Yudkin’s work had been so discredited that very few scientists dared publish anything negative about sugar. They feared the same reprisal.

To this day, sugar is still revered in spite of bad science.

Food manufacturers still try to spin sugar as okay to have in your diet as long as you have “a balanced diet.” Coke’s recent dietary propaganda prompted this video rebuttal:

 True Change Begins With Education

If you want to break your addiction, education and a strong network of good friends is key. Connecting a strong emotion like anger will help. I know it sounds strange, but let righteous indignation work for you.

One more thing about craving sweets before moving on. Forget about artificial sweeteners. Research shows that products like aspartame worsen insulin sensitivity–even more so than sugar!

Worse, if that’s possible, artificial sweeteners trick your body into thinking it will get sugar. There’s only one problem with that. You can’t fool Mother Nature! Your body knows that the sweetener isn’t sugar. If it was sugar, your brain would release dopamine, which is like a reward center. Then leptin, an appetite-regulating hormone would also be released. This tells your body, “I’m full!”

With artificial sweeteners, the reward system does light up but never turns off. Consequently, leptin is never released, which means you never feel full. When you don’t deliver on the goods, you crave more carbs. That means weight gain.

Bottom line: In spite of food manufacturers claim of weight loss with artificial sweeteners, there’s 30 years of scientific  research to refute those claims. The trust is artificial sweeteners stimulate your appetite, increase carb cravings, and screw with your metabolism causing you to store fat and gain weight!

They also cause weight gain by disrupting the microflora in your gut. This raises the risk of both diabetes and obesity. Avoid them!
